Facts for Spinach

Spinach is a great source of vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, folate, and magnesium.

*The iron and calcium in plant foods are not easily absorbed by the body due to a compound contained in these foods called oxalic acid.  To increase iron and calcium absorption, spinach should be eaten with foods high in vitamin C, such as tomatoes or citrus fruits.


Facts about Spinach:

  • Spinach is thought to be Persian in origin, probably cultivated over 2000 years ago.

  • In the U.S. in the 1920s, spinach became commercially popular by the Popeye the Sailorman cartoons, who proudly advocated spinach consumption.
